RED ON RED

This video explores the imagery of watching and voyeurism. With cameras watching the subject and in turn their flickering view finders are filmed, the video is played back on screens, thus layering image over image. This juxtaposition of image next to or within a moving image creates the possibility of new meanings and moments. The subject is obscured by the distorted lensing and layered visuals and remains out of full view. The over saturated red is a nod to Italian giallo cinema and the heightened emotional world of those films. I used a mix of analog and contemporary digital cameras in order to create the alternative multi frame imagery. The analog video has the patina of nostalgia, as well as a grainy physical presence, which is a satisfying counterpoint to the optically distorted digital footage.

Art Lesson

She stood at his
burnt windows
until she saw herself
answered in their dark,
the way glass gets
blacked at night
in a lighted room.
She went home,
pulled the curtains;
drew a red bath.
